Whole Body Cryotherapy

During a Cryotherapy session the body is exposed to ultra-low temperatures, down to (-110° C/-230° F). The client is placed in our XR cryochamber for a short duration of 2-3 minutes,  during this time the client’s skin surface temperature is lowered significantly, stimulating skin receptors.

This method was first utilized in Japan in 1978 to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Studies conducted over the last two decades in Europe have established Cryotherapy as a powerful treatment for a broad range of inflammatory disorders, bodily injuries and conditions. WBC purifies the blood, increases the body’s nutrient flow, and removes toxins from the system. By increasing the rate at which purified blood circulates through the body, the rate at which soft tissues and joints can heal is maximized.

Professional athletes have discovered Cryotherapy as a powerful treatment to decrease recovery time and increase athletic performance. Although Cryotherapy originated in Japan, it was a group of Polish scientists who developed the Process and made Cryotherapy the well established physical therapy tool it is today. The Olympic Sports Centre in Spala opened in May 2000, Cryotherapy is used in this facility during training and injury rehabilitation for many athletes. In the past 3-5 years, numerous professional sports franchises have installed Cryotherapy saunas and chambers in their training facilities.

The Benefits of Cryotherapy

Health and Wellness Benefits

Ever since Whole Body Cryotherapy was developed in its modern form in the 1970s, MDs in Europe and Asia have touted its natural benefits for health and wellness. Only recently have these health innovations begun to catch on in the US.

Whole Body Cryotherapy can be used to effectively treat a number of conditions and to improve patients’ overall health. If you’re looking to decrease pain, accelerated muscle healing, or simply improve general health and wellness or solutions to any of the other conditions below, WBC may be right for you. Please contact our trained staff at ProRecovery today to schedule a visit.

Inflammatory conditions such as fibromyalgia, psoriasis, and arthritis are chronic pain, redness, swelling, or stiffness caused by the body’s natural response to an injury. Because Whole Body Cryotherapy enhances the body’s natural healing mechanisms, WBC can be a very effective anti-inflammatory treatment for the following conditions, among others:

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder caused by overstimulation of your brain’s pain sensors. Because Whole Body Cryotherapy works by manipulating pain sensors into implementing a heightened level of your body’s natural healing mechanisms in response to cooler temperatures, many patients have experienced long-term relief from fibromyalgia thanks to WBC.

Psoriasis is caused by the overstimulated growth of skin cells. During the Whole Body Cryotherapy session, this growth is temporarily slowed so that the body can focus on transporting blood to extremities in order to keep them warm. After the session is complete, skin cell growth is “reset” back to normal levels, resulting not only in the effects of psoriasis being minimized but also in a healthier, more youthful complexion.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Whole Body Cryotherapy was developed in its original form in Japan in order to treat rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation. The cool temperatures from the XR Chamber gently force inflammation to subside, providing relief from joint pain for most patients immediately after use.

Depression and Anxiety
The ultra-cool air used in WBC causes the brain to release a higher-than normal level of endorphins and other “feel-good” hormones. Because of the increased endorphins and adrenaline levels after a session, many users have reported enhanced mood and increased energy thanks to WBC.

Reported benefits of Whole Body Cryotherapy for health and wellness include:

  • Reduced inflammation (inc. fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis)

  • Reduced psychological stress, anxiety, and depression

  • Increased energy

  • Improved sleep

  • Enhanced immune function

  • Better joint function

  • Increased libido

  • Quicker post-surgery recovery times
